How scoring works · Part 2 of 3
Leg sub-rankings
Points on the side of the main game. Each leg is a sub-ranking of its own, and the dark horse is a separate game. None of it adds to the main ranking.
- The five legs. Order the swim, T1, bike, T2 and run too. Each leg is its own sub-ranking, with up to 58 points per leg, per race.
- Fastest-time guesses. Guess the fastest time on each leg. Up to 9 points per guess, in that leg's sub-ranking.
- Dark horse. A separate game with its own ranking. Up to 50 points per race, never in the main ranking.
The main ranking is your overall picks plus your winning time. Your picks for a leg and your fastest-time guess for it make that leg's sub-ranking, with its own points and its own places. The dark horse has a ranking of its own.
The five legs
Each leg is its own sub-ranking: who swims fastest, who is quickest through T1, and so on. Only that leg's own time counts, not where they finish the race. Your first 10 picks on each leg earn points in that leg's sub-ranking, and nowhere else.
- Swim
- T1
- Bike
- T2
- Run
- 1st6
- 2nd to 3rd4
- 4th to 5th2
- 6th to 10th1
- 11th or further back, or no time recorded for that leg0
On the legs, only the exact top 3 earns the podium bonus. There is no any-order bonus.
The run counts official finishers only. The other four legs count anyone who recorded a time for that leg, even if they dropped out later.
Fastest-time guesses
If you like, guess the fastest swim, T1, bike, T2 and run of the day. Optional. Each guess scores in that leg's sub-ranking. The closer you are, the more points, and the exact second earns extra on top.
- Exact second+5 extra
- Within 15 seconds4
- Within 45 seconds2
- Within 1 minute 30 seconds1
- Further off0
- Exact second+5 extra
- Within 5 seconds4
- Within 15 seconds2
- Within 30 seconds1
- Further off0
- Exact second+5 extra
- Within 1 minute4
- Within 3 minutes2
- Within 5 minutes1
- Further off0
“Within” includes the boundary. Exactly 60 seconds off still counts as within 1 minute. The same goes for the winning time.
Leave a leg time blank and you score 0 there. No penalty.
Dark horse, a separate game
A dark horse is an athlete outside IRONMAN's top five who goes and wins, or lands on the podium. It is a separate game with its own ranking: your dark horse never adds to your main points.
- Ranked 1st
- M2Ranked 2nd
- M3Ranked 3rd
- M4Ranked 4th
- M5Ranked 5th
- M6Ranked 6th
- M7Ranked 7th
- M8Ranked 8th
Pick one per race. Anyone IRONMAN ranks 6th or lower can be your dark horse; the top five cannot. Ranked 1st to 5th means their place on IRONMAN's start list, the order your lists start in.
Wins 50. Podium 30. 4th or 5th 15. Both races added up, ranked on its own.
- What your dark horse doesPoints
- Wins50
- Finishes 2nd or 3rd30
- Finishes 4th or 5th15
- 6th or lower, or did not finish0
In the worked example, your dark horse was Gia Toledo.
- Ranked 7th on the start list, outside IRONMAN's top 5, so she can be picked. She finished 4th.+15
- These points go on the dark horse ranking, never into the main ranking.
Your dark horse can also sit anywhere in your overall picks. The two games are scored separately. The picks page only offers athletes who can be picked.
